The President of the Republic, Juan Carlos Varela Rodríguez started this Monday the Teacher Training stage of Panama Bilingüe, which started this past August 4th, 2014.

In this stage of the course, more than 550 English teachers, from 15 educational regions of the country, participate in the exercise.  The objective is to train this personnel to perfect their knowledge of English language and apply new methodologies that would allow them to improve their performance in classes and make interaction between students and teachers more attractive in this matter.

“This program we start today is part of The People First Governmental Plan and is born from the clear comprehension that our development requires, precisely, becoming a bilingual country”, said the President.

Varela Rodríguez argued the reasons are evident, “we are a country whose main strength is providing service to international commerce and our main commercial partner is the United States of America, maybe the most dynamic and strong economy in the world”.

Methodology

The training will take place in two places: the group of teachers coming from the educational regions of Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, the Ngabe Buglé comarca, Los Santos, Herrera and Coclé, will attend Escuela Normal de Santiago.

The rest, that is the teachers form Central Panama, West Panama, East Panama, San MIguelito, the Guna Yala comarca, Colon and Darien, will receive training at the auditorium of Universidad Latina of Panamá.

This training will cover four areas; planning, evaluation, management of classes and teaching, (placing the student as main axis).

In his message, President Varela reiterated, “It is not about loosing our language, but about gaining a second language”.  After training the first 550 teachers, in January 2015, another group of 550 will enter the program, until all 3 thousand 500 English teachers in the educational system are trained.

“Panamá Bilingüe” includes three parts: Teacher Training, After School Program and Kids. The Teacher Training is directed at working teachers and graduating and graduated high school students.

Within this component are four activities: local training of working teachers; local training of graduating and graduated high school students; teachers sent to English speaking countries and Mixed Teacher training (when they return from training in foreign countries).

The training outside the country is for teachers handling courses like Spanish, Science, Social Studies, etc. and graduating and graduated students at Normal de Santiago, who will be sent for six months to prestigious teaching universities in English speaking countries.

These teachers will participate in a semester of English and new teaching methodologies of this second language.

Panama Bilingual will be executed during the period 2014-2019, and will cover 25 thousand teachers, 100 thousand students in middle and high school, 160 thousand in elementary, for an estimate of 285 thousand bilingual students.
